Project Description & Timeline
South County Hospital, 100 Kenyon Ave, Wakefield, RI 02879
South County Health Leadership has worked with local residents and government officials representing the Town of South Kingstown, the State of Rhode Island, and the U.S. National Park Service to resolve a long-standing issue that will alleviate parking frustrations of patients who rely on the medical services at South County Health, while providing area residents with a greenway to enjoy the natural environment that is an essential characteristic of this community.
South County Health will give the Town of South Kingstown a 35-acre parcel of undeveloped, forested land abutting Glen Rock Reservoir, in exchange for a 7.2 acre parcel of land abutting hospital property located at the southerly end of Town Farm Road, adjacent to Dobson Road. South County Health will use some of the 7.2 acres for employee parking, while offering the remainder for public use and recreation.
The area will include passive stormwater filtration to protect Narragansett Bay and landscaping to provide a buffer to the existing residential area. A new playground will be erected, allowing children to enjoy active, outdoor recreation. The area will be enhanced with a walking path with respite points overlooking the Saugatucket River. The path will continue along the perimeter of the South County Hospital campus, connecting with Kenyon Avenue.
The improvements and enhancements to this 7.2 acre tract supports the Town Comprehensive Plan Recreation Vision and South County Health’s Strategic Plan.
